Captivated by Corals: Celebrating the MSC Foundation’s efforts at Ocean Cay.
October 2024
Despite covering less than one per cent of the Earth's surface, coral reefs play a vital role in the survival of over 25% of marine life. They are also among the most endangered ecosystems on the planet, with more than half lost to climate change, pollution and fishing in the last 70 years alone.
Inspired by a commitment to safeguard the oceans we sail, the MSC Foundation is leading coral conservation efforts at MSC Cruise’s private Caribbean island, Ocean Cay. Since its launch in 2019, our Super Coral Programme has been part of ongoing initiatives to help sustain coral reef ecosystems globally.
Improving the Resilience of the Reefs
The MSC Foundation’s offshore nursery currently features five distinct species of resilient, reef-building 'super coral' varieties, represented by 13 genotypes. There are now over 500 coral fragments, thriving in Ocean Cay's waters. Their remarkable 100% survival rate is a testament to the programme's effectiveness. When ready, they will be replanted further afield across an area of 64 square miles around the island.
During the course of Autumn 2024, the programme will take another significant step forward with the completion of phase one in the construction of a unique Marine Conservation Centre. More than just a research base, when finished, this centre will be a hub for our cruise guests to learn about coral reefs and feel a part of this crucial conservation work.
"Our team is focused on delivering fantastic experiences while educating guests about our commitment to the environment, both above and below the water," explained Andrew Brett, Managing Director of Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve.
A new tour for guests will also be launched, providing a comprehensive overview of Ocean Cay's transformation from an industrial sand excavation site to an amazing tourist destination dedicated to the restoration of local natural resources. It will showcase the vital coral nurseries, the 40 species of birds safeguarded by our Avian programme and the protected turtle nesting site.
